Is the body fat test an IQ tax or not?

Whether it's in the gym or a medical check-up centre, there is always a body fat test. Many businesses have also taken aim at our thirst for health and launched devices that can measure body fat percentage. The question is, are these devices reliable? Further, what are the common misconceptions about body fat?

Myth 1: The lower the body fat percentage, the better

Mistake.

The so-called body fat percentage is the ratio of the weight of body fat to the weight of the whole body.

Ideally, energy intake and energy expenditure should be roughly balanced every day. If too much energy is consumed or too little is expended, there will be a ‘surplus’ that will be converted into fat and stored by the body.

Some people shake their heads when they hear the word ‘fat’, but there is no need to do so. Fat is one of the essential tissues of the human body and has important physiological functions: it maintains body temperature when it is cold, reduces tissue friction during exercise, provides energy when you are hungry, and secretes hormones to maintain normal metabolism.

Fat is not ironclad. Generally, excess energy is first sent under the skin to become subcutaneous fat. Although subcutaneous fat is not very elegant to look at, it has minimal effect on health. However, there is only a limited amount of room under the skin, and if there is not enough room, the body sends the energy between the internal organs and converts it into visceral fat. Visceral fat has a huge impact on health and is behind diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The accumulation of visceral fat produces a noticeable change in body shape. The whole person looks like a pear, which doctors call abdominal obesity.

So, how do you know if you have fat accumulation between your internal organs?

According to the recommendations of the American Council on Exercise (ACE), the body fat percentage of men is less than 25% even if it is normal, and women should be a little more special, as said, fat can secrete hormones, which is important for maintaining a normal physiological cycle, so the normal range of women's body fat percentage is between 25% and 31%.

In addition, body fat percentage will change with age, roughly speaking, the older the age, the higher the body fat percentage. Be sure to make reasonable judgements based on your own situation and do not blindly pursue a low body fat percentage.
